ENGLAND: Five men have been arrested on suspicion of planning a terrorist attack and crimes involving explosives, police say. The arrests came after three “suspicious vehicles” were seen heading towards an RAF base.
A major incident was declared, and dozens of homes near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire were cleared after the report was made at about 00:45 BST on Sunday.
An Army team that deals with explosives has been checking vehicles near the base. The United States Air Force (USAF) has used the base to launch attacks against Iran since March. Counter-terrorism police are leading the investigation.
People who left their homes in the nearby village of Whelford have been told they cannot return overnight. Officials say they believe the situation is under control.
Aerial pictures showed a remote-controlled robot moving towards parked white vans in a wooded area, but police have not confirmed how it was used.
A 400-metre safety area has been set up around the site. A specialist emergency team was sent there as part of a large response by emergency services.
