Halqa Arbab-e-Zauq Holds Weekly Session Under Hussain Majruh

LAHORE: The third critical session of the new season of Halqa Arbab-e-Zauq, Lahore, was held under the presidency of renowned poet Hussain Majruh. The evening featured rigorous literary critiques of both poetry and prose, drawing an audience of over 80 participants.

The session commenced with Munazza Sahar presenting her poem titled “Tijarat” for critical review. After a diverse round of feedback from the attendees, Hussain Majruh shared his presidential remarks.

  • The Verdict: He noted that while the poem effectively navigates the realm of the “known” and “defined,” the poetess should strive to represent the “unknown” and the abstract to add more depth to her work.

In the second half, Jawaz Jafri presented his analytical essay, “The Triangle of Drama, Music, and Dance.” The house engaged in a spirited debate over the historical and cultural links discussed in the paper.

  • The Verdict: Majruh commented that while the essay left some thirst for more detail regarding folk arts specifically Bhangra, Baisakhi, and Lohri Jafri succeeded in “infusing fresh water into a barren heritage.” He emphasized that uncovering cultural history is an immense task, stating that “civilizational life will remain hidden from us until we reconcile with these neglected sciences.”

During the meeting, special prayers were offered for the soul of the late veteran journalist Altaf Hassan Qureshi. Additionally, Aftab Javed distributed copies of Qazi Zafar Iqbal’s latest short story and poetry collections among the members.

The session concluded on a high note with Hussain Majruh reciting two of his poems and a ghazal, earning significant applause from the audience. The opening couplet of his ghazal resonated deeply with the attendees:

Jis tarah bhed ko afzai se dar lagta hai
Husn ko apne hi saudai se dar lagta hai
