PP Leaders Call for Action on Women’s Safety in Punjab

Lahore: Pakistan People’s Party Central Punjab General Secretary Syed Hassan Murtaza is addressing a press conference at the People’s Secretariat, Model Town.

LAHORE: Pakistan People’s Party Lahore leaders Ahmed Ghuman, Sania Kamran, Azeen Gulzar have said that Pakistan is going to turn 80 but women in Punjab are still not free from oppression and violence, the incidents of crimes against women in Lahore are very worrying, the government should take effective steps to ensure law and order and the safety of women.

Addressing a press conference at Gulzar House along with Hassan Abbas and Atif Khokhar on Thursday, Ahmed Ghuman said that Lahore is number one in terms of crimes against women, the Chief Minister’s red line has become a green light in Lahore police stations, just suspension is not enough for crime incidents in Ghaziabad and Township police stations, but strict action should be taken against those responsible.

He said that a complete investigation should be conducted into the alleged death of two women in police custody in Pakpattan, the Lahore High Court should form a judicial commission to inquire into the incident. He said that like the Raza Mir case, a complete investigation and postmortem should be conducted by Dr. Samia in the deaths of both women so that the facts can come out.

Ahmed Ghuman said that the entire police system has been destroyed, the Federal Interior Minister should also focus on increasing the capacity of the Punjab Police. He said that Maryam Nawaz should focus on the problems of her province instead of criticizing other provinces. The standing of rainwater in Lahore is the result of the absence of local governments.

If such an incident had happened in Karachi, there would have been extensive coverage in the media. Deputy General Secretary Sania Kamran said that Field Marshal General Asim Munir has played an important role in stopping the US-Iran war, while the Mecca Defense Agreement will prove to be a milestone for peace and stability in the region. She said that President Asif Ali Zardari’s efforts in this regard are also commendable.

He said that the President should hold talks with political parties to improve the situation in Azad Kashmir. There are reservations regarding re-polling in the third phase, making the elections controversial should be avoided.

The incidents of rape of women in Lahore are disturbing, the suspension of any official cannot provide justice to the oppressed, the Punjab government should pay special attention to the problems of women and the law and order situation. Azain Gulzar said that daily life in Lahore is being severely affected by traffic problems, after the recent rains, the city’s sewage system has failed.

Due to standing water, citizens, students and worshippers are facing difficulties in reaching mosques and educational institutions. He said that the performance of “Sathra Punjab” seems to be limited to a few major roads, the condition of government hospitals also needs to be improved.

The government should explain why load shedding is increasing despite the solar system. Azain Gulzar demanded that a complete and transparent investigation be conducted into the alleged rape of women in Lahore police stations and action be taken against the responsible elements according to the law.
