BRUSSELS: The European Parliament will host a workshop on November 4 to examine how artificial intelligence (AI) can support legislative work, improve the drafting of laws and strengthen public participation in policymaking.

The workshop, titled “AI for Legislative Work,” will be organised by the Parliament’s Panel for the Future of Science and Technology (STOA) at the European Parliament’s Info Hub.

The event will explore practical applications of AI in the legislative process, including drafting and reviewing legislation, identifying regulatory gaps and supporting more effective policymaking.

According to the European Parliament, artificial intelligence should support legislators and their staff rather than replace democratic decision-making. The workshop will also examine the advantages, limitations and governance challenges associated with using AI in legislative institutions.

The programme will feature presentations on AI-powered legislative support in Italy’s Chamber of Deputies, the use of AI personas in policy development, tools for understanding European Union law and large language models designed to support French legislative proposals.

Speakers listed in the draft programme include Monica Palmirani of the University of Bologna, Thomas Hemmelgar of the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre, Veera Heinonen of Finland’s Sitra and Emmanuel Cortes from the Office of the French Prime Minister.

European Parliament Secretary-General Alessandro Chiocchetti is scheduled to deliver the opening address. A panel discussion will follow the presentations, with European Parliament President Roberta Metsola scheduled to deliver the closing address.
The workshop will be held in English without interpretation.

The Parliament has stated that registration is not required to watch the event online, and the webstreaming link will be published one or two days before the workshop.

The discussions are expected to contribute to wider policy debates on the responsible use of AI in public institutions, legislative transparency and the future of digital governance.
