LAHORE: Members of the Punjab Assembly have expressed grave concern over the decision to impose a fine on Punjab Assembly Opposition Leader Mueen Qureshi, calling it a part of ongoing efforts to suppress the voices of PTI leaders nominated by founding chairman Imran Khan.
In a joint statement, the assembly members stated that the decision against Mueen Qureshi raises serious questions regarding democratic freedoms and the supremacy of the rule of law in the province. They emphasized that while founding chairman Imran Khan remains behind bars, the leaders standing alongside him continue to face immense pressure and targeted actions.
The lawmakers also voiced serious alarm over the political situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, specifically referencing allegations regarding the abduction of KP Chief Minister Sohail Afridi. They demanded that the security and legal rights of all political figures be unconditionally ensured.
“When allegations concerning the abduction of a provincial chief minister emerge, and an opposition leader in another province faces punitive fines, it is natural for critical questions to be raised about democratic norms and fundamental freedoms,” the members stated.
Reiterating their firm stance, the assembly members declared that leaders nominated by Imran Khan cannot be silenced for adopting a principled political stance or advocating for the rights of the public. They stressed that instead of attempting to suppress the opposition in Punjab, the government must listen to dissenting voices and respect freedom of expression as a vital pillar of a democratic system.
The Punjab Assembly members have urgently demanded a transparent legal review of the decision against Mueen Qureshi and called for the absolute protection of the constitutional and legal rights of all political leaders across the country.
“Whether it is Imran Khan, Mueen Qureshi, or Sohail Afridi, it is imperative to rise above political differences and guarantee the protection, safety, and due legal process for every political leader,” they concluded.
