ISLAMABAD: Bill Gates has warned that artificial intelligence could be used to cause deaths on a massive scale. He said AI is powerful, especially when used by people with harmful intentions.
Gates called on US lawmakers to create rules for AI. He said companies cannot regulate themselves alone and that governments should help set safety rules and monitor the technology. He added that these rules should not greatly slow down the industry.
Gates also warned that AI could threaten humanity in the future, but said people should pay attention to the risk of harmful use today.
His comments came after leaders from major AI companies spoke to the United Nations Security Council about the risks of advanced AI. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said that poorly managed AI could threaten humanity. AI expert Yoshua Bengio said the dangers are real and urgent, and that countries cannot deal with them alone.
Governments are trying to keep up with AI’s rapid development. The United States and China disagree over whether AI needs global rules or should mostly be guided by the market.
US President Donald Trump opposed international efforts to control AI. He called the technology amazing and said the United States should be careful without slowing its growth.
