Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (Workers) Statement on World Press Freedom Day

By News Desk

LAHORE: On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (Workers) reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the rights, safety, and economic security of media workers across the country. Today, the profession of journalism in Pakistan faces an unprecedented siege, burdened by an engineered economic crisis, restrictive legislation, and mounting pressures on truth and professional ethics.

The media fraternity continues to bear the brunt of explicit and implicit pressures, particularly through legislative measures designed to suppress free expression and limit constitutionally guaranteed rights. The implementation of the Punjab Defamation Act and amendments to the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) have created a suffocating environment for truth-tellers.

The PFUJ (Workers), and other representative bodies, have formally challenged these draconian measures in the Lahore High Court and the Islamabad High Court. While court proceedings have provided temporary relief against coercive actions, we remain hopeful that the judiciary will uphold fundamental rights and strike down laws that criminalize journalistic inquiry.

Furthermore, a critical crisis exists in the economic exploitation of media workers by media house owners. Despite an increase in corporate and government advertising revenues, media organizations are utilizing these funds to maximize profits while denying basic salaries and laying off senior staff.

Organizations are deliberately adopting “minimal manpower” models, leaving operational and field staff without financial security or protection. We strongly demand that all government and corporate advertising quotas be tied directly to the mandatory, timely clearance of employee salaries and job security.

At the same time, professional journalism is being undermined by the unchecked proliferation of untrained individuals on digital platforms. Operating without formal training, these voices often disregard verification processes, media ethics, and defamation laws, creating an uneven playing field where sensationalism eclipses nuanced reporting.

This creates an environment of misinformation that harms the credibility of real, investigative journalists.
In the face of these monumental challenges, the PFUJ (Workers) emphasizes that unity among all media workers is paramount.

While our organization and other factions have maintained distinct identities, we are actively making concerted efforts to unite all journalists and trade union bodies under one banner.

We extend an open hand and a strong call to all organizations to set aside past differences and stand together to defend the rights of media workers and ensure the survival of free speech in Pakistan.

Democracy cannot flourish where truth is punished, and those who expose it are left unprotected. Justice for journalists is justice for society.
