Farrukh Moon Criticizes Govt. Over Rs.117 Petroleum Levy

Rs.1,240 Billion Collected in 10 Months from Petroleum Levy and Waste Management taxes, common Man Burdened by Double Taxes, Says Farrukh Javed Moon

LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Member of the Provincial Assembly (MPA) Farrukh Javed Moon has launched a scathing critique against the federal government following Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik’s recent admission regarding the high taxes on fuel.

Reacting to the Minister’s statement that a Petroleum Development Levy (PDL) of Rs. 117 per liter is currently being enforced, the PTI lawmaker termed it a “Jaga Tax” (extortion) being forcibly collected from the poverty-stricken masses. He stated that the government has turned state mechanisms into a tool for looting the public under the guise of various levies.

Farrukh Javed Moon claimed that the government’s appetite for taxes has reached unprecedented levels.

  • The MPA alleged that within just 10 months, the government has squeezed a staggering Rs. 1,240 billion from the public through the petroleum levy alone.
  • He highlighted that the common man is being crushed by a double-edged sword—facing heavy petroleum levies on one hand and “Kachra Tax” (waste management tax) on the other.

Taking a jab at the ruling coalition’s claims of being economic experts, Moon remarked: “Those who called themselves ‘experienced’ have proven to be the most incompetent rulers in the world.”

He further added that the current administration’s primary objective is not to provide relief to the citizens but to “empty their pockets” to cover up their own fiscal mismanagement.

The statement comes after a Senate Standing Committee meeting where Petroleum Division officials confirmed that the high fuel prices are primarily driven by the Rs. 117 per liter levy. The PTI has consistently maintained that these taxes are part of an “anti-people” budget designed to meet harsh international lending conditions at the expense of the domestic consumer.
