Barabri Party Pakistan (BPP) Chairman Jawad Ahmad Calls on Field Marshal Asim Munir to intervene and resolve Pakistan’s energy crisis promptly.
LAHORE: Barabri Party Pakistan (BPP) Chairman Jawad Ahmad has asserted that the skyrocketing cost of electricity and the inflating utility bills crushing the masses are directly caused by the ruling elite and the astronomical capacity payments being made to Independent Power Producers (IPPs).

Addressing a press conference at the Lahore Press Club, the singer-turned-politician claimed that the ongoing energy crisis could be resolved immediately by Field Marshal Asim Munir.
Jawad Ahmad highlighted that the relentless electricity bills have broken the back of the common man, while the industrial sector is facing severe financial distress due to the unsustainable power tariffs.

He criticized the ruling political class for systematically hiding facts from the public for decades, accusing various mainstream political parties of acting as accomplices to protect and sustain the current exploitative system.
The BPP Chairman shared alarming figures regarding the financial burden of the energy sector for the fiscal year 2025-26, stating that a staggering Rs 1,940 billion was allocated to IPPs solely under the head of capacity payments.
He provided a detailed breakdown of these public funds:
- Government-Owned IPPs: IPPs owned by the federal government and the provincial governments of Punjab, Sindh, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa received Rs 951 billion.
- CPEC & Chinese IPPs: Projects under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and other Chinese IPPs were paid Rs 699 billion, accounting for 36% of the total payments.
- Private IPPs: Other private independent power producers received Rs 291 billion.
Outlining his party’s roadmap for the country’s energy independence, Jawad Ahmad vowed that if the Barabri Party is voted into power, it will take drastic structural measures to reform the sector.
“We will completely abolish the capacity charges of government-owned IPPs and initiate renegotiations on Chinese power projects,” Ahmad announced.

He further emphasized that a sustainable solution lies in localized, sustainable technology. He promised that a BPP government would aggressively promote the establishment of localized microgrids and transition toward advanced lithium and sodium battery technologies to make Pakistan genuinely self-reliant in energy generation.
