Lahore: Director General Libraries Punjab Kashif Manzoor speaking about the promotion of book reading and the revival of a reading culture

LAHORE: Director General Libraries Punjab Kashif Manzoor speaking about the promotion of book reading and the revival of a reading culture, said that the Punjab Libraries Department has launched a nationwide campaign titled the “National Book Reading Movement.” The campaign’s basic slogan is “One Year, One Book,” with the aim of encouraging every Pakistani to read at least one book each year.

Kashif Manzoor said that in an age dominated by mobile phones and social media, information is widely available, but deep and meaningful reading is gradually declining.

He said that books remain the best companions of human beings and one of the most effective means of bringing about intellectual transformation.

Reading not only enhances knowledge but also develops thinking, character and the ability to tolerate differing views.

He emphasized that connecting the younger generation not only with Urdu literature but also with Punjabi, Sindhi, Pashto, Balochi, Saraiki and other regional literatures is an important need of the present time.

For this purpose, he said, technology is being utilized to promote reading through book clubs, meetings with authors, book introductions and online activities.
