LAHORE: A meeting of Halqa Arbab-e-Zauq Lahore was held at Pak Tea House under the chairmanship of Dr. Zia-ul-Hassan. Joint Secretary Shahzad Framosh read the proceedings of the previous meeting.
Zeb-un-Nisa Wasiq presented her poem “Makkaar Hamdard” for critical discussion. The chair said that the issue of poetic metres had been discussed and remarked that even great experts can sometimes make mistakes. Contrary to the opinions expressed by others, he said, “I believe the poem is very good.” He observed that the poem strongly reflects a feminist perspective.
The participants then discussed Sameera Umar’s essay “Christian-Muslim Relations in the Urdu Novel.” Dr. Zia-ul-Hassan said that the essay was strong from a research perspective but comparatively weak from a critical standpoint and could be revised. He praised its style and congratulated the writer on producing a good piece of research.
Giving his presidential remarks on Manzar Ejaz’s ghazal, Dr. Zia-ul-Hassan said that it belonged to a world different from the one in which contemporary ghazal poetry exists today. “There is tradition behind it, as well as modern knowledge,” he said. “One can express love for both. May you continue to live and keep writing such verses.”
Later, prayers were offered for the forgiveness of Sattar Syed, who had recently passed away.
Secretary Aftab Javed announced that the 87th anniversary celebration of Halqa Arbab-e-Zauq would be held at Quaid-e-Azam Library on September 20.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Dr. Zia-ul-Hassan recited two of his ghazals and received warm appreciation from the audience.
According to the attendance register, 101 people participated in the session.
